This Friday was my Mum’s birthday, and I couldn’t think of anything more fitting than to give her a portrait of my parents when Dad was still with us.
I’m so glad I painted it, but I wasn’t prepared for how emotional it would be. For the first time in 23 years, I spent hours looking at Dad’s face life size, as though he were smiling at me. I found myself remembering the banter and sense of humour we shared, and it brought back so many cherished memories. I guess that’s only natural. I’d like to think he was with me throughout the process.
Seeing Mum’s smile when she unwrapped it made every emotional moment worthwhile. ❤️
